Cost of college increased for all Northern Illinois University students during 2022-23 school year

Northern Illinois University raised its tuition by 1.5% for the 2022-23 school year, as revealed in the most recent report, according to the latest disclosure from the National Center for Education Statistics.

Students enrolled at the four-year public university paid $12,662 this year, which is $184 higher than the $12,478 charged in the 2021-22 academic year.

Approximately 93% of the undergraduate student body at Northern Illinois University are Illinois residents. Residents from other states make up about 5%, while international students account for roughly 1%.

Data indicates that 99% of full-time undergraduates who began studies at Northern Illinois University in 2022-23 received some form of student financial aid. In total, 2,323 students were awarded grants or scholarships amounting to $31.5 million, and 1,382 students obtained student loans exceeding $8.6 million.

Across the entire undergraduate population, 10,082 students benefited from grants or scholarships totaling $112.7 million. Additionally, 5,584 students secured $36.5 million in federal student loans.

Meanwhile, student loan debt has steadily increased over the last 30 years, reaching $1.75 trillion in 2024, averaging a total of $28,950 per borrower. Federal loans make up 92% of the debt, with over half of students at both public and private four-year colleges graduating with student loans.
