FOIA Request to City of Sycamore Regarding Building Permits on October 30, 2024.

On October 30, DeKalb Times sent a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the City of Sycamore in Illinois. The request seeks comprehensive details about both new and active residential and commercial building permits issued from January 1, 2023, up until the present day.

As a media organization dedicated to providing accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we are particularly interested in the transparency and accountability that such records can provide. The information requested includes the type of permit, date issued, fee paid, requester’s name, address, and contractor’s name for each permit.

This information is crucial for our ongoing investigation into local construction activities and their implications for community development. As part of our commitment to transparency and public service journalism, we believe it is essential to understand how these permits are distributed and managed.

The request was made under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act (5 ILCS 140), which provides the public with access to government documents and records. As a media organization involved in gathering and reporting news to the public, we have requested a fee waiver for this information.

We at DeKalb Times believe that access to such public records is vital for holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to our readers. We will continue our efforts to report on local governmental affairs accurately and comprehensively.
