The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has announced a new photo contest aimed at showcasing how transportation connects communities and keeps the state moving. Through June 7, IDOT will accept original photos depicting various modes of transportation in Illinois, including biking, walking, rails-to-trails projects, highways, bridges, work zones, transit systems, airports, and waterways.

Submitted photos will be reviewed by IDOT staff and narrowed down to three finalists. The entries will be judged based on creativity, aesthetics, and the impact of the photo subject on the individual or community. These three finalists will then be displayed online for a public vote to determine the winner.

The photo receiving the most votes will be featured on IDOT’s Facebook banner for an entire month. Winners will also receive a certificate of recognition and a mention in a statewide announcement on IDOT’s website.

Amateur photographers are encouraged to participate using cell phone pictures if desired. All submissions must relate to the theme of transportation in Illinois and be submitted digitally to DOT.PhotoContest@Illinois.gov. Complete rules can be found on IDOT’s website.

Safety is paramount in this contest. “Do not take photos while driving – we will not accept them,” emphasized an IDOT spokesperson. Additionally, photos taken from railroad property or without noting if they were captured with a dash cam will not be accepted.
