The village of Kirkland announced the implementation of the At Your Door program by waste management last week.

Waste items that are not acceptable for trash or recycling pickup may now be collected by appointment.

Among the items unacceptable for regular pickup of trash and recyclables are household chemicals, paint, electronics, vehicle batteries, motor oil and flammables such as old gasoline.

To arrange for an at-your-door pickup, first make a list of the unwanted items and the amount to be picked up. Then, contact waste management online at www.wmatyourdoor.com, by email at atyourdoor@wm.com or by phone at 1-800-449-7587.

During the appointment process, applicants must provide their address and a list of the items for pickup. After making the appointment, they will receive a large envelope holding the containment bag, instructions, labels and a survey card.

On the day of pickup, place the items in the containment bag. Some items -- such as auto batteries and electronics -- may be placed next to the bag. Put the bag in the designated place, such as by the garage or near the front door, by 7 a.m.

Do not put the containment bag next to the trash cans or at the curb. All items should be sealed, not leaking and clearly labeled.

Waste management will recycle most of the waste and dispose of the remainder appropriately.
