State Rep. Jeff Keicher (R-Sycamore) welcomed $6.6 million earmarked for facility improvements at Northern Illinois University, approved as part of the May 2018 budget agreement.

"I am pleased to see this much-needed investment in infrastructure improvements at NIU move forward," Keicher said on his website. "I applaud my new colleagues in the general assembly for including this funding in the FY19 state budget and look forward to working together to strengthen our commitment to higher education at NIU and across the state."

The funds will go immediately to update the campus HVAC system by adding two new steam boilers and replace boiler hardware already in use, Keicher’s website stated.

Keicher, who won the Republican primary, was appointed in July to fill the 70th District seat Robert W. Pritchard vacated.

“This capital investment in Northern Illinois University allows for critical infrastructure improvements here,” Gov. Bruce Rauner said in a press release. “These improvements go hand-in-hand with enhanced scholarship programs like AIM High and MAP Together, the investments help us do a better job of preparing our students for the 21st-century economy.”

Keicher will face Democrat Paul Stoddard and Libertarian John Eldon Mathey in November’s general election.

The 70th District includes the cities of Belvidere, DeKalb, Elgin, Genoa and Sycamore.
