Delia M. Remala, age 103, lifelong resident of Sycamore, died at her home surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on November 23, 1915 in Sycamore, one of eight children born to Swedish immigrants, Andrew and Amanda (Anderson) Anderson. On February 6, 1935 in Geneva, Illinois, she married William G. Remala and together they had three children, John, Dale, and Carole.
Dee, as she was known to many, worked many jobs during her life, but later retired from her job as a cashier for the National Tea grocery store. She was a proud member of the Rebekkah Lodge (holding many positions including that of Noble Grand), the Sycamore Kitchen Band, and the Federated Church. In her spare time she loved to bowl, knit, crochet, and create beautiful pieces of cross-stitch. Some of her favorite things include flowers, Country Music, traveling with family as well as going on short trips with friends from the Senior Center, cooking and baking for her family including her family’s Swedish biscuits, and Bulls basketball. Always a die-hard Cub fan, she attended many games at Wrigley Field, and was thrilled when "her" Cubs won the 2016 World Series. In addition, she loved birds and had numerous pet parakeets.
Known to others as Gram or Grambo, she was always a wonderful grandmother, and children loved to spend time with her. You could find them baking cookies, playing cards, and sharing stories, all while receiving a special kind of love and nurturing that only she could give. In addition, she helped many others, both inside and outside her family, including her parents in their later years. Her home was always open to anyone who needed her, and many family members along with others can say that at some time in their life they either lived with or were in some way helped by her.
Although the last few years of her life were challenging, she battled through them with grace, wondering many times why she was still here. The answer is clear: She was here to show us all how to live, and if we learned by her example the kind of person to be, then she lives on in us all.
Survived by sons, John of Arizona and Dale (Pat) of Sycamore, and daughter, Carole Gates of Clarksville, Tennessee, 10 grandchildren, including special grandson, Gary Gates, who lived with and helped care for her, and many great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by her parents, husband William “Bill” in 1988, siblings George "Carl", Albin “Spike”, Violet “Vi”, Gilbert “Chuck”, Pauline “Nean”, Charles “Chick”, and Chester “Chet”, daughter-in-law Marie Remala, son-in-law Arlan Gates, and great granddaughter, Becky Parker.
Services will be held on Monday, February 18, 2019 at the Butala Funeral Home, 1405 DeKalb Ave., Sycamore, IL at 11 a.m. with visitation during the hour preceding starting at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Sycamore.
