Sycamore Fire Department issued the following announcement on May 10.
This morning, the Sycamore Fire and Police Departments participated in the presentation of Operation Prom at the Sycamore High School.
The intent of the presentation is to show students what can happen when they drive while distracted or intoxicated and to empower them to make the right choices.
Juniors and seniors gathered to witness the mock crash. They heard sounds of tires screeching, metal crashing and their peers crying out for help.
Police vehicles, fire trucks and ambulances soon arrived to the scene, where three vehicles were involved in an accident. Two of the vehicles were packed with students on their way home from prom.
While all of the injured were tended to by the Fire Department, one of the drivers was given a field sobriety test by a Police Officer. The driver was "arrested" for suspected DWI – driving while intoxicated.
After all of the injured victims were cared for and transported to the hospital from the incident scene, the DeKalb County Coroner tended to and removed one of the fatally injured prom goers. It is a very sobering part of the presentation.
We would like to thank the following supporting agencies and business that helped to provide a successful presentation:
