The number of people coming to the food pantry has doubled in the last several weeks.
The Kishwaukee Family YMCA and the Northern Illinois Food Bank recently partnered to provide food for as many as 100 families.
“The YMCA throughout the years is always concerned with food insecurity,” YMCA CEO Mark Spiegelhoff told the Daily Chronicle. “We have demonstrated that by making sure that the children in our child care and day camp programs do receive nutritious meals every day they’re in our care.”
The two entities have been working together for a few weeks now, offering drive-thru pickup of non-perishable items to families on a bi-weekly basis. The next is scheduled for April 24.
“This to me is an extension of that where even though the Y is not opening and servicing children and programs, we can still do our part to help those who are food insecure in our community,” Spiegelhoff told the Daily Chronicle.
Barb Food Mart is also committed to doing its part to make sure families in the area aren’t left in need. Officials there recently received a $5,000 donation from DeKalb Township, with the money earmarked to help families impacted by the coronavirus with food and necessities.
Over the last several weeks, the number of people coming to the pantry every Thursday has more than doubled, with the only stipulation being that those visiting the pantry have a child or grandchild enrolled in a school in District 428.
