The fifth distribution of DeKalb County's real estate taxes was made last month by DeKalb County Treasurer Christine Johnson's office.

According to the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce, Johnson reported her office has collected over $221.1 million in real estate taxes this year and has a total of $2.2 million to be collected.

“This amount represents 96.31% of the taxes to be collected," she said. "With this distribution, we are just slightly ahead of where we were last year at this time."

This will be the final and fifth distribution of the 2019 real estate taxes from Johnson's office. On Oct. 26, the annual tax sale will be held.

"The balance of the taxes due will be collected through the tax sale process," the Chamber reported. "Following the sale, the Treasurer’s Office will then make one final distribution of the balance of the taxes paid."

Interest earned by the Treasurer's Office is also included in the distribution, which will benefit the taxing bodies, while the funds will remain in Johnson's custody in her office.

DeKalb County's Treasurer's Office has been distributing to the taxing districts since 1994 a sum of approximately $4 million in interest, according to the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce.

"Of the $221,142,304.82 that has been distributed, $24,292,193.05 has been distributed to DeKalb County and Forest Preserve District, $8,973,623.68 has been distributed to townships and township road and bridge districts, $4,980,422.74 has been distributed to libraries, $15,702,983.67 has been distributed to cities and villages," the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce reported. "Fire districts have received $4,743,188.52 and $8,618,074.93 has been distributed to park districts. School districts have received $132,883,606.47; community colleges have received $13,326,088.99; TIF districts have received $7,421,279.90; and drainage districts have received $200,842.87."
