The Sycamore Park District has been awarded $391,738 from the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) to put toward Segment 2 of the Great Western Trail Extension from Sycamore Forest Preserve to Old Mill Park.
State Rep. Jeff Keicher (R-Sycamore) announced funding for the trail's extension project on June 10.
"The Great Western Trail is one of our region's most cherished outdoor recreational treasures that families enjoy year-round," Keicher (R-Sycamore) wrote in a post on his Facebook page. "I am pleased to have helped secure funding for an extension that will connect more of our community to the trail from the Sycamore Forest Preserve to Old Mill Park."
According to a release on Keicher's website, the money comes from the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program under the Rebuild Illinois capital program.
The program aims to help financially support biking, walking paths, trails and other local projects that are meant to promote a safe travel experience by different means of transportation.
The release goes on the state the western part of the Great Western Trail allows the path of an old railway corridor for 17 miles through DeKalb and Kane counties. Parking for the west end of the trail is off Old State Road road in Sycamore.
