Stargazing – Rain or Shine! Join NIU STEAM outdoors in person or online for a dazzling evening of stargazing and viewing of the annual Perseid meteor shower. These brilliant meteors radiate from the Perseus constellation and appear throughout the sky. Our panel of experts will introduce us to stellar science subjects, such as measuring the cosmic microwave background (the afterglow of the Big Bang) and exploring Mars through rover technology. Then we’ll head out to observe the night sky with telescopes or the naked eye. We’ll provide a few telescopes, or feel free to bring your own. Examining the Universe through the South Pole Telescope – Amy Bender, Ph.D., and Lindsey Bleem, Ph.D., Argonne National Laboratory physicists Learn how Bender and Bleem are analyzing cosmic microwave background from the Big Bang explosion 14 billion years ago to probe big questions about the origins and future of the universe. And hear what it’s like to live and work at the South Pole Telescope – one of the most remote research stations on earth. Rovers, Data and Technology: Finding Signs of Life on Mars – Marco E. Castillo and Christine A. Knudson, NASA scientists and NIU alumni Learn how teams of NASA scientists and engineers use rovers to gather and interpret data from Mars. Hear about new technologies NASA is developing to search for evidence of ancient life on Mars and beyond. What's in the Sky Tonight? – Jeremy Benson, NIU STEAM educator Learn the whats and whys of the Perseid meteor shower and discover what to watch for in August’s night sky.
