The House Republican Majority has issued the following press release:
SPRINGFIELD, IL – For the past few years, it seemed the FBI became the 178th unofficial member of the Illinois General Assembly as public corruption consumed the State Capitol. The latest betrayal of the public’s trust comes from former House Speaker Michael Madigan, who was indicted yesterday with 22 counts of racketeering, conspiracy, bribery, wire fraud, and attempted extortion.
“Dave Vella just can’t quit Mike Madigan,” stated Jayme Siemer, executive director of the House Republican Majority. “From staff to campaign contributions, Madigan provided for Vella, and now Vella is paying him back with loyal silence.”
Madigan is accused of using his elected, political, and professional roles to enrich himself and his cronies. For close ally Rep. Vella, Madigan sent $325,000, ensuring Vella’s loyalty to the status quo.
“Dave Vella failed to speak out for families tired of investigations, indictments, and arrests,” Siemer said. “In fact, even as rumors of malfeasance swirled around Madigan, Vella supported him for Speaker of the House. Vella affectionately described Madigan as ‘one-of-a-kind,’ which is fortunate for Illinoisans because we can’t afford more Mike Madigans or Mike Madigan sympathizers in the Illinois House. It’s time for a new day.”
