Rep. Tom Demmer (R-Dixon) recently met with supporters at the McDonough County Republicans’ McDonough Lincoln Day Dinner.

“Great crowd with the McDonough County Republicans this weekend in Macomb,” Demmer posted on Facebook.

In January, Demmer announced he would run for state treasurer. The primary election will be held June 28.

“Springfield politicians’ answer to every problem is higher taxes and more spending,” the House deputy Republican leader wrote on Twitter. “Our hardworking families have had enough. That’s why I’m running for state treasurer, I will be a fiscal watchdog to help turn things around and get Illinois back on track.”

According to Capitol News Illinois, Demmer said he’ll oppose tax increases and promote state spending transparency.

In May, he protested the state budget for 2022-2023:

“The budget the Democrats passed this year sets Illinoisans up for a series of tax increases in future years, as a result of their inevitably increasing spending at a time when revenues are declining,” Demmer said. “We talked a lot about the last couple of years how unusual some of these state budgets have been, given the heavy reliance on federal COVID relief dollars. If we just look at normal state spending, normal state operations for education and public safety and health care, normal state spending is growing by over 10% in this year's budget.”

According to the Illinois State Board of Elections, Demmer and Democrat Michael Frerichs are running unopposed in their respective primaries.

In April, Demmer sponsored House Resolution 504 to show support for land-regaining efforts for the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation.

“Over the last several years I’ve been working with both tribal representatives and representatives of the local government at the Village of Shabbona which is in DeKalb County in the southern end of my district to right this historical wrong,” Demmer said. “To try to call attention to a very unusual circumstance, one that we’re not accustomed to dealing with in the state of Illinois.”
