The Northern Illinois University football team was back to work bright and early Monday morning, opening fall camp at Huskie Stadium to start the 2022 season.
"Today was a great start," said head coach Thomas Hammock, entering his fourth season as head coach. "The guys were excited to get after it. We split up the practice into two sessions so everybody could get work. It's important for us as coaches to coach all 110 guys and work with each player to improve our football team."
The Huskies were split into two groups with each practicing for 90 minutes starting at 7 a.m. There was a 30-minute period for special teams between the two practice sessions. NIU returns a wealth of experience from last season's team that won the Mid-American Championship, but Hammock said the split practice allowed each player to get the instruction needed as the preseason camp begins.
"We have a lot of veteran guys coming back, but I want to put the emphasis on teaching each player and have them all understand that they have a chance to compete for a job," Hammock said. We're going to have our eyes on each player, we'll have a lot of film to evaluate and we're going to give everybody an opportunity to play."
