City of Dekalb City Council met May 9.
Here are the minutes provided by the council:
The City Council of DeKalb, Illinois, held a Special meeting at the former Hunter Hillcrest Shopping Center, 1011-1027 W. Hillcrest Drive, DeKalb, Illinois.
A. CALL TO ORDER AND ROLL CALL
Mayor Barnes called the meeting to order at 3:00 p.m.
Recording Secretary Ruth Scott called the roll, and the following members of the City Council were present: Alderman Carolyn Morris, Alderman Barb Larson, Alderman Scott McAdams, Alderman Tony Faivre (arrived at 3:01 p.m.), and Mayor Cohen Barnes. Alderman Greg Perkins and Alderman Mike Verbic were absent.
B. PUBLIC COMMENT
Mark Charvat expressed his opinion regarding the posting of the agenda for this meeting, stating that while it was posted on the City’s website, it had not been posted at the site properly, specifically on the fence surrounding the property.
Mayor Barnes commented that the agenda was posted on site as required in three separate spots within the building.
C. DEMOLITION KICK-OFF CEREMONY – CELEBRATING THE NEXT STEP IN THE REVITALIZATION OF THE ANNIE GLIDDEN NORTH NEIGHBORHOOD WITH THE DEMOLITION OF HUNTER HILLCREST SHOPPING CENTER.
Mayor Barnes spoke briefly, stating that one of the reasons he ran for Mayor was because of Hunter Properties (the former owner of the shopping center), which has caused a lot of harm within the community. He further stated there are many great landlords within DeKalb who do a phenomenal job taking care of their tenants and properties and the City supports them and wants to be a partner for them. However, there are also landlords who do not do the same and they are not welcome in DeKalb. Mayor Barnes noted that he will do whatever is required to remove those landlords in order to provide a community where its residents can feel safe.
Mayor Barnes then invited all City Council members and City staff to join him for a photograph with ceremonial sledgehammers, one of which will hang in the second-floor conference room along with shovels from recent groundbreaking ceremonies, symbolizing the development and redevelopment of DeKalb.
D. ADJOURNMENT
MOTION: Alderman Smith moved to adjourn the meeting; seconded by Alderman McAdams.
VOTE: Motion carried by a 6-0-2 roll call vote. Aye: Morris, Larson, Smith, McAdams, Faivre, Mayor Barnes. Nay: None. Absent: Verbic, Perkins. Mayor Barnes declared the motion passed and adjourned the meeting at 3:06 p.m.
