The U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission, established by Congress in 2016, is working diligently to plan and orchestrate the largest and most inclusive anniversary observance in the nation's history.

Illinois is among the 38 states that have established a Semiquincentennial Commission. Their principal purpose is to plan, promote, and implement appropriate commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States of America.

The American Association for State and Local History, a national professional association dedicated to helping the history community thrive, has established several themes for America's 250th birthday. These themes include Unfinished Revolutions, Power of Place, We the People, American Experiment, and Doing History. The aim is to ensure that Americans of all ages and backgrounds see themselves in history and to enhance the impact and relevance of history organizations in their communities.
