Sycamore High School's Youth and Government Program based out of the Kishwaukee Family YMCA has been instrumental in shaping the next generation of leaders since its establishment in 2016. Led by Kristin Miller, Sheri Wigant, and Jordan Wilkerson, the program at Sycamore High School has witnessed significant growth and success, providing students with a hands-on experience in state governance.

This year, the Sycamore High School delegation excelled at the Illinois YMCA Youth & Government program, with 44 students participating in the 75th Annual Springfield Assembly. The students immersed themselves in various roles within the government, gaining firsthand experience of the legislative process at the Illinois Capitol and Supreme Court facilities.

"The best part about this program is that these students are learning how to articulate their differences in opinions in a respectful way," highlighted Kristin Miller, the Program Advisor, emphasizing the program's focus on respectful discourse and constructive dialogue.

The delegation's achievements were notable across different categories, with standout performances from students like Jared Lanting, Caleb Fruit, Benji Devroye, and Nate Miller, who was elected as Speaker of the House. Additionally, the delegation made significant contributions to the legislative process, with six bills passing through committee, addressing important societal issues.

During their participation at the Springfield Assembly, students had the privilege of meeting Representative Jeff Keicher, who commended their engagement and interest in the democratic process. Rep. Keicher praised the Youth & Government program, stating, "It is always inspiring to spend time with engaged students who want to learn more and be part of the democratic process in our country. The YMCA Youth & Government is a really fascinating and beneficial program."

As the Sycamore High School delegation continues to excel in the Illinois YMCA Youth & Government program, it not only demonstrates the talent and dedication of its students but also highlights the significance of civic education in shaping future leaders. The program remains committed to empowering youth and fostering informed and engaged citizens prepared to make a positive impact in their communities and beyond.
