On April 17, 2024, a bill aimed at improving awareness of Scott’s Law passed the House with unanimous support. Scott’s Law, a crucial roadway safety regulation, mandates that drivers slow down and move over when passing any vehicle with hazard lights flashing on the side of the road.

The sponsor of HB 4711, Rep. Jeff Keicher, emphasized the importance of the law and the need for drivers to adhere to it. Keicher highlighted that the bill requires individuals who answer Scott’s Law questions incorrectly on their written driving test to receive information about the law and its penalties, which can include fines up to $10,000, a two-year suspension of driving privileges, or even jail time in extreme cases.

In a statement following the bill's passage, Keicher urged everyone to play a role in ensuring road safety by respecting Scott’s Law: "Let’s all do our part to keep our roads safe by Slowing Down and Moving Over when we see a vehicle with flashing hazard lights, so everyone can get home safely."

The approval of this legislation signals a significant step towards promoting adherence to Scott’s Law and enhancing overall road safety.
