FOIA Request Sent to City of Dekalb Finance Department Regarding City Sales Tax Records on October 31, 2024

A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the City of Dekalb Finance Department on October 31, 2024. The request was made by DeKalb Times, a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.

In the interest of transparency and accountability, we requested specific records under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, 5 ILCS 140. The records sought include a list of businesses that paid sales tax to the city from January 1, 2023, to October 31, 2024. The requested information for each business includes its name, type, and the amount of sales tax it paid during this period.

In addition to this detailed breakdown, we also asked for the total amount of sales tax that the city collected within the same timeframe. This data is critical in understanding how much revenue the city generates from local businesses through sales tax and where these funds are coming from.

As a media organization committed to reporting news to the public and holding public institutions accountable, we believe access to such public records is essential. We have requested a fee waiver as part of our professional role in disseminating information to our readership.

The City of Dekalb Finance Department has yet to respond or provide any feedback regarding this request.
