Women’s History Month, observed annually in the United States since 1987, has its origins in a weeklong event held in Sonoma, California, in 1978. The celebration was extended to a month-long observance by Congress to acknowledge the significant contributions of women throughout history.
In Illinois, several women are actively representing their communities as part of the House Republicans. These representatives bring diverse experiences and share a commitment to public service. They have made progress in areas such as healthcare, education, and economic development.
House Minority Leader Tony McCombie's political journey began at the local level as Mayor of Savanna, Illinois. Her experience there gave her insights into grassroots challenges. She transitioned to state politics in 2017 and now represents the 71st district. In January 2023, she became the first woman elected as House Minority Leader in Illinois. Her focus includes job creation and government accountability.
