DeKalb community invited to government watchdog seminar at NIU

Classroom(1000)

The Better Government Association (BGA) is partnering with the Northern Illinois University (NIU) Department of Communications and the Northern Illinois Newspaper Association to offer a free BGA Watchdog Training Session in DeKalb on Sept. 21.

The event will run from 7 to 9 p.m. at NIU,  covering topics that enable community members to monitor the actions of their local governments, according to a press release. BGA trainings are hosted by investigative journalists and attorneys who offer their real-world expertise in promoting government transparency.

Participants will learn the basics of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), including how and when they can submit FOIA requests and how to appeal if those requests are denied. The training will also cover the Illinois Open Meetings Act.

Like all trainings, the NIU event is free and open to the public. Those interested can register at www.bettergov.org or request more information from Annum Haider at 312-821-9031 or ahaider@bettergov.org.
