Dekalb FD responds to 137 fires in 2017

Dekalb Fire Department responded to 632 calls in 2017 - 7.3 percent less than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in Dekalb included 137 fires - 63 structure fires, 15 vehicle fires and 59 other fires. The fire department also responded to 14 calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $1,040,050 in fire loss - or about $7,592 per fire.

The department also received 481 false calls, including 28 malicious calls and 453 other false calls.

The calls resulted in 11 civilian fire-related injuries and one civilian fire-related death. Additionally, one fire service member was injured in fire-related incidents and three were injured in non fire-related incidents.

The Dekalb Firefighters Pension Fund, which has 55 active employees and 60 retired or inactive employees, was $143,910 in debt as of December 2016, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $972 for every fire in 2016.
