Dekalb Chamber of Commerce Inc issued the following announcement on Nov.5.
Goodwill Industries of Northern Illinois is seeking volunteers for its GoodTAXES program located in the Rockford regional area, DeKalb, Belvidere and Beloit, WI. The GoodTAXES Program offers free income tax preparation services for low-to-moderate income area residents from January to April each year. The program is entering its 10th year at Goodwill with over 18,000 tax returns filed in the 10 year span.
“The volunteers are critical to the success of this initiative and we are so grateful for their time and talents”, stated Jason Haller, Goodwill Financial Programs Manager. “Our volunteers are rewarded with a great deal of experience, gratitude from our staff and customers, and the rewards of assisting their fellow community members. Last year, our volunteers helped complete over 3,000 returns which saved local tax payers over $560,000 in filing fees!"
There are many different roles available at Goodwill’s tax sites and no experience is necessary to become a volunteer. All training is provided free of charge. Volunteer opportunities include tax preparers, greeters, customer service assistants, and interpreters. Volunteering hours are flexible and include days, nights, and weekends. Training takes place starting in December with sign-ups starting immediately.
