Construction continues in DeKalb County in spite of the coronavirus.
While the COVID-19 pandemic has brought everyday life to a grinding halt, construction continues in DeKalb County.
Illinois was one of the first few states to implement a stay-at-home order requiring non-essential businesses to temporarily shutter. Under Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s order, construction workers are deemed essential like health care workers, law enforcement and grocery clerks, reported the Daily Chronicle.
COVID-19 did not hamper Ferarra Candy Company’s plans to build a 1.6 million-square-foot distribution center on the city’s south side. In fact, the shell of the distribution facility has been built.
According to DeKalb City Manager Bill Nicklas, it is business as usual for those in construction.
"They're doing all they can do whether there's a COVID-19 crisis or not," Nicklas told the Daily Chronicle. "All the outer precast concrete walls are up. Those are ultimately connected to a steel system which provides structural strength over time."
The facility will have employed 500 people more than six months into next year, according to a press release.
