A $3.6 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation will help fund the City of DeKalb’s public transit system.

The grant came from the CARES Act. DeKalb transit manager Marcus Cox said with reduced municipal revenue during the COVID-19 pandemic, the extra money is important.

“We are operating a $9 million a year operation that if other funds are impacted, than this will help, but it’s not the end-all, be-all answer,” Cox told Northern Public Radio.

The $3.6 million grant will be used for COVID-19 emergency response, wages for employees on paid administrative leave caused by reductions in transit service, and transit operations, the Daily Chronicle reported.

The city operates Huskie and TransVAC buses in conjunction with the Voluntary Action Center and Northern Illinois University.
