Letter to the Editor: Small businesses need help not tax hikes

Business closed coronavirus 1600x900

Dear Editor,

As a small business owner, I see the economic destruction that the COVID-19 pandemic is causing in Illinois. My business, like other small businesses in Illinois, has seen fewer customers and had to change the way we do businesses to make sure customers and employees stay healthy. Due to these necessary steps, small businesses have had to reduce costs and staff.

Now that small businesses have figured out new ways to keep customers and employees healthy during] the pandemic, they are beginning to reopen. However, lawmakers in Illinois want to stifle this economic rebound by proposing an increase in taxes and minimum wage hikes.

With these proposals, small businesses that are already struggling will not be able to fully recover and bring back or hire new employees. Governor Pritzker and Illinois state lawmakers should be incentivizing small businesses to reopen instead of adding more taxes and forcing them to remain closed, possibly forever.
