Competing for the first time in 2022, the Northern Illinois University women's track and field team claimed seven event victories on Saturday (Jan. 15) at Grand Valley State's Bob Eubanks Open.
Kadeja Campbell (St. Ann, Jamaica/Southern-New Orleans) won a pair of events, taking top honors in the 200 and 400-meter dash, Kimone Hines (Hanover, Jamaica/Southern-New Orleans) won the 60-meter dash, Kennedy Crawford (Douglasville, Ga./Alexander) was first across the line in the 800 meters and Scout Regular (St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word Academy) bettered the field in the 60-meter hurdles on the track.
The Huskies also won a pair of jumps with Kenyae Majors (Burlington, N.C./Hugh Cummings) finishing first in the long jump and Katrina Small (Atlanta, Ga./Arkansas-Pine Bluff) winning the triple jump.
"For our first competition after break, the athletes were extremely focused and competed with heart," said NIU Director of Track and Field Connie Teaberry. "We have several technical issues we have to address, but even through those the athletes had a strong showing today. Each athlete had solid performances and the staff is excited to see how the rest of the season shapes up.
"Our highlights today were Kadeja Campbell's wins in the 400 & 200. Her times move her up on the MAC performance list and are definitely confidence boosters."
Campbell led a Huskie sweep of the top-five spots in the 200, running a winning time of 24.27 seconds. She was joined in the top-five by Malia Waktins (Upper Marlboro, Md./Missouri State) in 24.67, Skylynn Blue (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) with a time of 24.97, Jahnetta Jones (Romeoville, Ill./Romeoville) in 25.10 and Hines, who ran 25.35.
