Huskies Falter in Final Round at Pinetree Collegiate

6

The Northern Illinois University women's golf team opened play Monday at the Pinetree Women's Collegiate tournament in Kennesaw, Georgia with rounds of 304 and 301 to sit in third place, before a season-high score of 326 Tuesday dropped the Huskies into a tie for 10th after the final round.

"We made some birdies yesterday and that allowed us to put together the scores we did," said NIU head coach Kim Kester. "It's a great golf course, a great layout. Today it was a little windier on the second nine, but we didn't make the on-course adjustments we needed to make. You're not going to play the same every single day and you have to be able to adjust. We have to work harder to get the results we want."

Sophomore Jasmine Ly (Windsor, Ontario, Canada/Holy Names HS) led NIU as her 54-hole total of five-over par 221 was good for a sixth-place finish, her fifth Top 10 finish this season. Ly shot par 72 and two-under 70 on Monday and added a seven-over 79 Tuesday.

"Jasmine's been playing fantastic," Kester said. "She was able to go home over spring break and work some things out which really helped coming into this tournament. She had an off day today, but overall, she's played really well for us."

Freshman Jóhanna Lúðvíksdóttir (Reykjavik, Iceland/Commercial College of Iceland) and senior Sofia Gomez Enriquez (Asunción, Paraguay/Montverde Academy), who was playing the tournament as an individual, tied for 37th at 20-over par 236. Both Lúðvíksdóttir and Karen Liu (Taipei, Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Heping) posted two rounds in the 70s Monday, while on Tuesday, Ly was the only Huskie to break 80.

Host Kennesaw State won the event by eight strokes over second-place Xavier.  NIU's 931 total tied the Huskies with Memphis for 10th place in the 12-team field, one stroke behind Florida Gulf Coast and five shy of a seventh-place finish.

NIU is back in action on April 4-5 at the EKU Colonel Classic in Richmond, Kentucky.
