Northern Illinois University sophomore Jasmine Ly (Windsor, Ontario, Canada/Holy Names HS) shot a six-over par 77 in the opening round of the NCAA Ann Arbor Regional Monday at the University of Michigan Golf Course in the first round for a Huskie women's golfer in NCAA Regional competition.
Ly, who teed off on the 10th hole along with individual qualifiers from Eastern Kentucky and Creighton, started with pars on the first five holes before running into trouble on hole 15 to post a double bogey. After parring 16 and 17, another double bogey at 18 left Ly at four-over through nine holes.
"This is a course that if you miss a fairway, it's going to play a lot tougher," said NIU head coach Kim Kester. "It was a windy day so that made the course extremely tough and a couple of loose shots got her in trouble."
The average score for all golfers on Monday was 75.47 and the 18th hole played as the toughest on the course with nine double bogeys.
Ly bogeyed two of the first three holes on the front nine before a birdie on hole No. 6 put her back to five-over par. She bogeyed the next hole, though, then finished par-par to post a 77 and is tied for 41st going into Tuesday's second round.
"Anytime you get to a Regional, it's going to set up tougher than the ones you see in the regular season," Kester said. "Then you add the wind, especially some of the holes playing into the wind that made it hard to reach in two, and you can see that even the best teams out here were over par today. Overall, Jaz handled it well and she'll look to bounce back tomorrow."
The NCAA Ann Arbor Regional continues Tuesday. Lee will tee off at 7:55 a.m. (CT) from Hole 10. Follow live scores on Golfstat.com.
