Redshirt freshman Blake West was crowned Mid-American Conference (MAC) Wrestler of the Week after winning his tilt with No. 8 Michael DeAugustino of No. 13 Northwestern last Friday, the league office announced Wednesday.
At 125, West earned the award after dismantling nationally-ranked DeAugustino 7-2 in tiebreaker II. The opening bout of the Huskies' dual with the Wildcats was scoreless until the second period when DeAugustino chose bottom and scored an escape. West matched in the third period, also choosing bottom and garnering an escape.
The match remained knotted 1-1 until tiebreaker I when DeAugustino chose bottom and earned a point via escape. With his back against the wall in tiebreaker II, West exploded for a reversal and four near-fall points to take a commanding 7-2 lead before the final whistle blew. The win marked West's fifth-straight win. He is now 2-1 in overtime bouts on the season.
NIU is next in action this Sunday (Feb. 19) at 1 p.m. as the squad heads to SIUE to finish off the regular season on the road. The dual will stream live on ESPN+ inside the First Community Arena.
