Mayor Cohen Barnes will issue a proclamation recognizing March 29 as Vietnam Veterans Day.

The date is the 50th anniversary of the complete withdrawal of combat and combat support units from South Vietnam.

The proclamation reads that Vietnam Era Veterans have “faithfully served and contributed to the military and, in the 50 years since, have faithfully served and contributed to their communities since returning home.”

It continues, “Vietnam Veterans Day commemorates the hardships suffered and sacrifices made by nine million Americans during the Vietnam War, including their families who supported them before and after the war.”

The proclamation will be presented to the DeKalb American Legion, DeKalb 40&8 and DeKalb AMVETS Veterans organizations.

It will be issued at the DeKalb City Council’s meeting at 6 p.m. Monday in the Yusunas Meeting Room at the DeKalb Public Library.
