Illinois House Republicans are actively working to protect and support the senior community through various legislative initiatives aimed at improving healthcare, housing, financial stability, and driver safety for older adults across the state. Representatives Ryan Spain, Jeff Keicher, Kevin Schmidt, and other House Republican legislators have introduced and championed several bills addressing these critical issues.

Rep. Ryan Spain has been a vocal advocate for seniors, focusing on property tax relief, transportation access, safeguarding retirement benefits, and protection against exploitation. Among his sponsored legislation are:

- SB2936: Aims to abate property taxes on renovated multi-unit residential housing.

- SB275: Extends driver's license renewals to every eight years for senior drivers.

- HB4072 (sponsored by Rep. Meier): Eases caregiver check-in requirements to improve continuous care.

- HB5027: Increases funding for mental health services for seniors.

“Our seniors have given so much to our communities, and it’s our duty to ensure they’re protected and supported,” said Rep. Spain. He also conducts "Medicare 101" events to educate seniors about Medicare complexities.

Rep. Jeff Keicher has proposed HB4431 challenging Illinois' mandate requiring drivers aged 75 and older to retake a behind-the-wheel driving test when renewing their licenses. He argues that testing should be based on individual driving history rather than age alone.

“Seniors deserve to live with the respect and dignity they’ve earned,” said Rep. Keicher.

Rep. Kevin Schmidt has sponsored legislation aimed at reducing property taxes, lowering grocery costs, protecting retirement income, and combating financial exploitation:

- HB1074 (Reick) & HB1274 (Elik): Increase the maximum income limitation for senior citizens' assessment freeze.

- HB3538 (Grant): Provides property tax relief for veterans.

- HB1219: Allows deduction of Medicare premiums from annual household income.

- HB2188 (McLaughlin): Shifts Medicaid fraud investigation responsibility from Illinois State Police to the Attorney General's Office.

- HB2336 (Sosnowski): Reduces food taxes.

- HB4178 (Davis): Reimburses family caregivers providing personal care or home health aide services.

- SB3476 (Elik): Creates a sales tax exemption for home-delivered meals paid through Medicare or Medicaid programs.

“Supporting our seniors isn’t just about policy—it’s about recognizing their invaluable contributions,” said Rep Schmidt.

House Republicans also support HR24 opposing taxation on retirement income as part of their commitment to easing financial burdens on seniors.

Additional senior-focused legislation introduced by House Republicans in 2024 includes:

- HB2094 (Sanalitro): Protects homeowners from deceptive mortgage refinancing advertisements.

- HB3202 (Sanalitro): Mandates coverage for at-home saliva cancer screenings every two years for high-risk individuals.

- HB3172 (Hammond): Facilitates insulin administration in assisted living establishments by allowing licensed healthcare professionals or individuals themselves to perform this task.

Together, these efforts reflect a shared commitment among Illinois House Republicans to safeguard the rights, health, and financial well-being of older adults in the state.
