The Illinois House Republicans have been actively encouraging blood donations throughout the state this year. Representatives Dan Ugaste, Tony McCombie, Jeff Keicher, C.D. Davidsmeyer, Brad Stephens, Jackie Haas, and Tom Weber have each organized successful blood drives in their districts.
Blood is consistently needed in Illinois and across the United States. According to the American Red Cross, a person requires blood every two seconds in the country. However, only about 3% of eligible individuals donate annually, leading to frequent shortages that endanger lives.
Recent years have presented additional challenges in meeting blood demand. The COVID-19 pandemic caused a decline in blood drives at schools and colleges and led to a significant decrease in donations. America's Blood Centers reported a drop of over 30% in donations from those aged 16-24 between 2019 and 2021, though older adults helped compensate for this shortfall.
In Illinois, these issues are particularly urgent. The Illinois House Republicans have responded by promoting blood donation efforts within their districts with positive results. They plan to continue advocating for this cause into 2025.
