FOIA Request Sent to Dekalb County Sheriff's Office Regarding Inmates with ICE Detainers on February 18, 2025

A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Dekalb County Sheriff's Office on February 18, 2025. The request was made by DeKalb Times, a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.

The request specifically sought documents and records showing persons committed to the facility that have had an Immigration Detainer issued by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency lodged against them since January 29, 2024.

Additionally, the request asked for any communication from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security regarding civil enforcement which are reportable under the TRUST Act and/or the Illinois VOICES Act. These acts are codified at 5 ILCS 805/1, et seq. and 5 ILCS 825/1, et seq., respectively.

As members of DeKalb Times, we believe access to public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities, which include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. We have requested a fee waiver as media professionals in light of our role in disseminating information.

It should be noted that DeKalb Times is a member of The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy, a non-profit corporation assisting news media companies, publications, and public advocacy groups in investigating state and federal governmental agencies. This coalition leverages Freedom of Information and Sunshine Laws to reveal government actions and help inform the American electorate.
