CITY OF DEKALB ADVISORY COMMISSION ON DISABILITIES: Full Enforcement of Safe Streets Initiative Parking Restrictions Begins August 16

Parking

City of DeKalb Advisory Commission on Disabilities issued the following announcement on Aug. 15.

Phase Four of the Safe Streets Initiative establishes additional parking restrictions east of Annie Glidden Road that includes resident parking areas and parking bans from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. A breakdown of these restrictions can be seen here Opens a New Window.. A two week-grace period will conclude Wednesday, August 15. Full enforcement will begin on Thursday, August 16.

The Safe Streets Initiative is a multi-faceted program designed to enhance public safety in neighborhoods near or adjacent to Northern Illinois University. The Safe Streets Initiative comprises three components; proactive policing strategies, enhanced parking regulations, and the establishment of “safe routes” in the affected neighborhoods.

All other phases of the Safe Streets Initiative are in full effect. Phase One addressed the neighborhoods adjacent to or near Russell Road and Crane Drive. Russell Road and Crane Drive restrictions prohibit on-street parking between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. Parking restrictions on the north side of Crane Drive are a no-parking zone (at all times) and the south side is no parking 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. These areas are both tow zones during prohibited hours. In addition, Moraine Terrace, Pheasant Run, and Evergreen Circle have been converted to 24-hour resident parking only on the south side of the street, with resident parking permits. Charles Street and High Terrace have also been converted to resident parking only. These areas are also tow zones.

Phase Two expanded resident parking areas from Phase One into other areas. This change was intended to preclude the displacement of vehicles from Phase Three into adjacent residential neighborhoods and prevent the deterioration of public safety conditions in the College/John Neighborhood and North Fifth Ward. These areas are also tow zones.

Phase Three established no parking zones from 2:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. west of Annie Glidden Road. This area is a tow zone. This phase helps to curtail overnight parking by non-residents in areas with public safety concerns. Resident permits are not given in this area.

Residents who qualify for a resident permit in Phase One, Two or Four may apply to the DeKalb Police Station at 700 W Lincoln Highway. A valid state ID or rental lease is needed to verify residency. Please note that it may take as much as one business day to process permit applications and permits are limited. Residential permits are $25 and are valid from August 1, 2018, until July 31, 2019. All resident permits issued prior to August 1 are no longer valid. These residents must come into 700 W Lincoln Highway to renew their pass.
