The price of local government in 2017: Town of Cortland

The Town of Cortland budget was $5.33 million for its 2017 fiscal year, or $3,925 per household.

That's an increase of 8.1 percent from 2016, when the village spent $4.93 million, or $3,631 per household.

Cortland has 1,358 households and a population of 4,326.

Since 2001, the Town of Cortland budget has grown by 17 percent, from $4.56 million. The village population has grown 109.4 percent over the same period, from 2,066.

Salaries accounted for 19.6 percent of village spending in 2017. Cortland property taxpayers paid $1.04 million for 15 full-time employees and 12 part-time employees.

In 2001, the village had four full-time employees and eight part-time employees, and spent $368,428.
