On December 11, 2023, the governor of Illinois signed legislation that will lift the moratorium on new nuclear construction in the state. This significant move will pave the way for the development of advanced small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs), ensuring a secure energy future in Illinois.

State Representative Jeff Keicher (R-Sycamore), who played a crucial role in the passage of the bipartisan legislation, expressed his support for the decision. He emphasized the increasing demand for electricity and the importance of nuclear technology in meeting future capacity needs. Keicher highlighted the benefits of nuclear energy, stating, "As a zero-carbon energy source that is not dependent on wind or sunlight, nuclear is essential to meeting energy demands as electric battery and vehicle technology proliferate."

Keicher also underscored the stability that nuclear energy brings to the energy portfolio, particularly during extreme weather conditions. He stated, "It will also help ensure stability in our energy portfolio, so residents do not need to fear grid instability through extreme cold spells during a polar vortex or extreme heat spells during a summer heat dome."

Illinois is already a leader in nuclear energy, with 11 operating reactors, the most of any state. Additionally, the state relies on nuclear energy for more than 50% of its energy needs and has the highest generating capacity in the country.

State Representative Lance Yednock (D-Ottawa), the chief House sponsor of the legislation, also expressed his support for the bill. He emphasized the importance of nuclear energy in ensuring Illinois remains a leader in clean energy technology. Yednock said, "Ensuring our energy future through advancements in safe, reliable, and renewable nuclear energy is essential to Illinois being a leader in clean energy technology."

With the lifting of the moratorium on new nuclear construction, Illinois is poised to continue its leadership in nuclear energy and secure its energy future. The development of advanced small modular nuclear reactors will provide a reliable and clean source of electricity, contributing to the state's commitment to sustainable and environmentally friendly energy solutions.
