DeKalb County Sheriff’s Merit Commission met Sept. 17.

Here are the minutes provided by the commission:

The Merit Commission met in the Situation Room at the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

I. Call to Order

Van Bomar called the meeting to order at 4:05 PM Tuesday, September 17, 2024.

II. Roll Call

Commissioners present at the meeting were: Commissioners Van Bomar and Anita Turner. Todd Walker was absent. Also present was Sheriff Andy Sullivan and Patrol Lt. Ryan Pettengell.

III. Approval of Agenda

Van Bomar called for a motion to approve the agenda. Anita Turner moved and Van Bomar seconded. All were in favor. No opposition. Agenda was approved.

IV. Approval of Minutes

Minutes from the previous meeting held 08/12/2024 were reviewed by Commissioners. Van Bomar called for approval of those minutes. Motion for approval was made by Anita Turner and seconded by Van Bomar. All were in favor. No opposition. The minutes from 08/12/24 were approved.

V. Public Comment

Though it was an open public meeting, no audience was present.

VI. Correspondence

Commission mileage sheet.

VII. Old Business

Sheriff Andy Sullivan advised the Commission Since the meeting in August, Dep. Ryan Loyd has officially retired from the Patrol Division on 08/23/24 and we have received a resignation notice from Patrol Deputy Lucas Chambers that will be effective 09/23/24.

Since the last meeting we have hired one new Telecommunicator, and 2 new Corrections employees:

Kate Diaz-Lopez on 08/05/2024 - Telecommunicator

Shannon Prete on 08/21/2024 – Corrections Deputy

Rachel McNabb on 09/13/2024 – Corrections Deputy

VIII. New Business – None

IX. Lateral Transfer Request – Patrol Division

Due to the Patrol Division being extremely short staffed, Sheriff Sullivan requested the Commission consider the lateral transfer of an applicant who currently lives in Las Vegas and works for Las Vegas PD. This applicant is looking to move back to the area and has family in the Waterman area. This applicant served in the US Air Force from 02/2018 to 02/2024. This applicant has completed the application and passed the background investigation. Sheriff Sullivan requested approval to hire this applicant pending the successful completion of the psychological exam and polygraph exam. Van Bomar asked for a motion to approve the lateral hire requested by Sheriff Sullivan pending the outcome of the psychological and polygraph exams. Anita Turner made the motion, Van Bomar seconded. All were in favor. There was no opposition. The patrol lateral transfer request was approved.

X. Executive Session – Applicant Interviews / Promotional Testing

Van Bomar asked for a motion to go into executive session for the purpose of Patrol Applicant Interviews. Anita Turner made the motion, Van Bomar seconded the motion. All were in favor, motion passed. The Commission adjourned into executive session to conduct Patrol applicant interviews at 4:09 PM.

The interview process Patrol applicants was concluded. Van Bomar, Anita Turner, Sheriff Andy Sullivan, and Lt. Ryan Pettengell were still present. With no other executive session matters to discuss, Van Bomar asked for a motion to return to regular session. Anita Turner made the motion, Van Bomar seconded, no opposition, motion passed.

XI. Adjournment

The Commission reentered regular session at 6:51 PM and with no further business to discuss Van Bomar called for a motion to adjourn. Anita Turner made the motion which was seconded by Van Bomar. All were in favor. There was no opposition, the meeting was adjourned at 6:52pm.
