State Sen. Dave Syverson posted a picture of himself on his Facebook account showing his constituents that he is celebrating ‘Read Across America’ by displaying a couple of books he used to read to his children.
Syverson wrote, “Happy Read across America Day. I did a virtual reading of a few of the classics! Brought back some great memories of reading these books to my children!”
The photo might stir some controversy since Syverson is holding two Doctor Seuss books in a time when Seuss' publisher is ending publication of some of his books for racist imagery.
Dr. Seuss Enterprises, the company that has been publishing Theodor Seuss Geisel’s (aka Dr. Seuss) books, made headlines recently when some libraries in Chicago pulled his books because of racist imagery. The books in question are: “The Cat’s Quizzer,” “Scrambled Eggs Super!,” “On Beyond Zebra!,” “McElligot’s Pool,” If I Ran the Zoo and “And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street.”
Conservative media blames the Democratic Party for pressuring Dr. Seuss Enterprises to stop the publication of those books. The Republican Party denounced the move and accused the Democratic Party of abusing ‘cancel culture’ and targeting a children’s book to further their agenda of racial equality and sensitivity.
