The Northwestern Medicine Sports Medicine and Imaging Center at 1704 Maple Avenue in Evanston has recently reopened after an extensive renovation. The approximately 20,000 square-foot facility is now home to physicians practicing in a variety of areas, including sports medicine, orthopaedic specialties, physical therapy and radiology imaging services.

With the large demand for same day/next day appointments for sports-related injuries, Northwestern Medicine is meeting those needs by offering appointments with sports medicine experts where patients can now often be seen that day or the following day, with state-of-the-art imaging such as MRIs on-site as well.

“Patients are now able to see our highly regarded sports medicine experts in a shorter amount of time,” said Adam Bennett, MD, medical director of orthopaedics at the Northwestern Medicine Sports Medicine and Imaging Center. “These are the same experts that regularly work with players from our local professional and college sports teams, offering the highest level of care to those in and near Evanston.”

The Northwestern Medicine Sports Medicine and Imaging Center offers full diagnostic imaging capabilities and services, including:

Comprehensive breast imaging including screening mammography, diagnostic mammography and breast ultrasounds

MRI (with state-of-the-art artificial intelligence)

Interventional spine and musculoskeletal injections

Ultrasound (full body, breast, soft tissue lumps, and deep vein thrombosis)

CT scans

X-ray

DEXA (with total body composition)

“Our goal is to provide exceptional quality and care to the Evanston residents and surrounding communities,” said Ajay Chapa, MD, MBA, medical director of ambulatory imaging at Northwestern Medicine. “Musculoskeletal conditions are the biggest contributor to morbidity in this country yet having access to experts in this field can be challenging. We look forward to serving the community and practicing our Patients First mission.”

Orthopaedic patients can also use the physical therapy gym located on the first floor.

Beyond musculoskeletal care, the addition of the Northwestern Medicine Comprehensive Breast Center clinic in Evanston provides evidence-based medicine to patients and offers screening and diagnostic mammograms, ultrasounds and breast MRIs for patients. Biopsies will also soon be offered at the site.

Sonya Bhole, MD, breast radiology and director of ambulatory breast radiology at Northwestern Medicine, is looking forward to offering new services for patients in the area. “We know that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, with the majority having no family history,” said Bhole. “However, healthcare disparities and barriers to screening still exist and these were only exacerbated after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. We are hoping to help close these gaps by providing timely access for more women in need of breast imaging.”
