The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is calling on fifth and sixth grade teachers to motivate their students to join the annual Poster, Poetry, and Prose Contest. The theme for the 2025 contest is "How Can You Slash Your Trash?" This initiative encourages students to creatively explore ways to reduce waste production. Suggestions include minimizing single-use products, composting food waste, repairing instead of replacing items, and recycling.

Students who meet eligibility guidelines will receive a certificate. Finalists will be awarded a certificate, ribbon, and an invitation to an awards ceremony in Springfield. The top twelve entries will be showcased on the Illinois EPA website.

"We believe that the creation of posters and written works gives your students an opportunity to express and share what they have learned on a deeper and more personal level using their creative and artistic abilities," stated the EPA. They added that the online exhibition highlights various methods for reducing environmental impacts.

Entries are due by February 3, 2025. More details about the contest can be found online.
