Dekalb Community Unit School District 428 students suspended, expelled 1,213 times in a single school year

Dekalb Community Unit School District 428 reported one expulsions and 1,212 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 1,213 students during the year. That equates to 18.6 percent of the 6,507 students enrolled.

Students were expelled for one incident with a dangerous firearm weapon.

Of the 885 in-school suspensions, 569 were given to boys and 316 were given to girls, including 101 elementary or middle schoolers and 784 high schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 884 incidents. There were one incidents of tobacco. For 841 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 327 out-of-school suspensions, 255 were given to boys and 72 were given to girls, including 180 elementary or middle schoolers and 147 high schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 299 incidents. There were 19 incidents of drugs. For 121 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.
